You can find everything in St. Petersburg whether you are looking for souvenirs, books, CDs or clothes. But always have some cash with you as not all shops accept credit cards.

Antiques and memorabilia cannot be exported without special permission: if you buy anything of value and want to take it out of the country, make sure get an export license from the Ministry of Culture. If you go to the Ministry of Culture, take the sales receipt of the item you are getting checked with you, as well as your passport or the passport of the person taking it out of the country.

Glossy books about the Hermitage and the Imperial palaces are sold on Nevsky prospect and outside the Winter Palace, sometimes at lower prices than in book-stores. Note that you need permission to take books more than twenty years old out of the country. All the stores sell art books in English and French.

Imported goods are available in all shops and department stores, alongside Russian products. So far as food is concerned it can be hard to tell them apart, as many foreign brands are now made under license or counterfeited in Russia - so it pays to examine items before buying. Alternatively, you could stick to one of the expensive foreign stores such as Kalinka Stockman (1 Finlyandsky Pr.), where everything is imported. The city’s markets are also a good place to pick up fresh produce.

The wide selection of fresh produce can be found in markets (rynok), where vendors tempt buyers with nibbles of fruit, cheese, ham, pickles and other homemade delights. Markets are open Tuesday to Saturday 8am to 7pm, Sunday 8am to 4pm. You need to bring cash, as credit cards are useless and there are rarely any ATMs in the vicinity.

Russian souvenirs are sold all over the city: along Nevsky prospect, Malaya Konyushennaya ulitsa, behind the Church of the Saviour on the Spilt Blood, inside, outside the main tourist attractions and hotels, and in countless stores. Those in the Russian Museum and around the Imperial palaces tend to have particularly good selections. As you’d expect, street traders are generally cheaper than stores.

The most common items are matryoshka dolls (either traditional style, or in the form of figures such as Putin, Yeltsin, Gorbachev or Stalin), hand-painted boxes from Palekh, lacquered spoons and bowls from Khokhloma, fur hats, Communist insignia and banners, icons and samovars (though you are unlikely to be able to take the last two out of the country). Small watercolor views of the city are sold on the street outside St. Catherine’s Catholic Church at 34 - 36 Nevsky Pr. In department stores, you may also come across lovely blue-and-gold tea services, based on Novgorod designs.
